Music icon Angélique Kidjo and Afropop star Ayra Starr are set to release a new single titled “Aye Kan (Are You Coming Back?)”.
Earlier in the week, Kidjo posted a photo from a recording studio. She sat clearly in front, while another person behind her was blurred out. In her caption, she asked fans to guess who it was, giving just one clue: the artist was born in Benin.
The hint quickly narrowed things down, with many fans already guessing Ayra Starr.
Not long after, Kidjo confirmed it. She shared a second photo—this time unblurred, showing both women seated together in the studio. The drew attention to what is a rare kind of collaboration.
Kidjo and Starr come from very different moments in African music.
Kidjo’s career spans over four decades; known for blending traditional West African sounds with jazz, funk, and global influences. Over the years, she has built an undeaniably strong international presence and remains one of the most respected African artists worldwide.
Ayra Starr on the other hand represents a newer wave in African music. The 23-year-old leans into softer vocals, emotional delivery, and modern production.
Despite these differences, there are clear points of connection.
Both artists have history in Benin. Kidjo was born in Ouidah, while Starr was born in Cotonou before moving to Nigeria. That shared background adds a stronger meaning to the collaboration.
“Aye Kan” is expected to be part of Kidjo’s upcoming project, although full details have not been released. The title, which translates to “Are You Coming Back?”, suggests a reflective or emotional theme, something both artists have explored in their music before.
Aye Kan (Are You Coming Back?) is scheduled for release on Friday, March 27, and will be available on major streaming platforms.
