Why Is Everyone Talking About His and Hers

Disclaimer: Spoiler Alert!!!

Ever watched a story with a plot twist that makes you pause to question the last 60 minutes you spent invested in a story? That’s what Netflix’s His and Hers, an adaptation of a book with the same title, did to the global audience that tapped in within days of its release. Since its January 8th debut on the streaming platform, everyone with an active account has an opinion about it.

His and Hers: A Story that Hits Close to Home

At the heart of this story is female lead Anna Andrews (Tessa Thompson), a once‑successful news anchor whose life fell apart after the unimaginable loss of her baby, who died in the care of her mother. She returns to her sleepy hometown, Dahlonega, Georgia, to cover a murder and finds out her ex-husband, Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), is leading the investigation.

Anna Andrews—The Woman at the Center of It All

Anna is smart and ambitious, with the emotional weight of disappointment and past trauma that many women are familiar with. Her return feels like the proverbial prodigal son.

Her grief made her abandon her husband and mother to live in isolation for a year. Upon her return, she realizes she has been replaced at work by a younger reporter, Lexy Jones (Rebecca Rittenhouse), who is my least favorite character, if you ask me. To prove her worth, Anna jumps on a murder case in her hometown, only to discover the victim is an old friend from a past littered with secrets she is unwilling to face.

Through Anna’s story, the show makes us ask questions like

  • Can you ever really leave your past behind?
  • Does a woman ever truly get a fresh start, or will the past always catch up with her?
  • When both love and the law feel dangerous, which one would you rather choose?

From a Woman’s Point of View, Why Does Anna’s Story Matter?

Well, His and Hers is more than just a thriller for many women:

  • Anna’s struggle with trauma, identity, and belonging mirrors the reality of so many women.
  • Her career challenges, accompanied by the struggles of navigating a male-dominated space, are something most women are familiar with.
  • Anna’s relationship with Jack goes beyond simple romance; it’s layered with history, guilt, desire, and unanswered questions.
  • Her choices and her pain become the emotional engine of the story.

Layers

This layered thriller sees Anna ending up on the suspect list. Want to guess who else is on the list? Jack. Yes. Her estranged husband was having an affair with the victim and was the last person to be seen with her.

His and Hers has sparked up conversations, especially among women who see pieces of their own journey in Anna’s. One of the many layers of this thriller is that Anna’s rival, Lexy, is actually Catherine Kelly, another person from her past. But that is not the actual twist.

The Twist Nobody Saw Coming

Critics and viewers have different opinions about this series; some are positive and look forward to seeing it, and others are utterly condemning, and you want to know the reason for the polar opposite reactions. Each episode grips you and pulls you into confusion until the final twist smacks you in the head upside down.

At first, everyone thinks the killer might be one of Anna’s old friends or someone taking out vengeance on high school bullies, but then, in what will be one of the most talked-about twists of the year, it turns out the real killer was Anna’s mother, driven by grief and love to protect her.

That ending has left everyone talking, from Twitter’s X to Threads, where no one saw “that twist coming.”

What Critics Are Saying

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, about 67% of critics gave positive reviews, but many agreed that the story can be messy, confusing, and uneven.
  • Metacritic scores the series 53 out of 100, meaning critics are torn on whether His and Hers is brilliant.

A post on Threads confused me because it was the first negative opinion I had seen about the movie, and the comments section didn’t help either. This hastened my interest in seeing the series. Some critics say the storytelling was struggling and exaggerated, while others appreciate the layered mystery and performances.

Moments

Gradually, the new age of TV and streaming has us connecting to shows beyond watching them. Our favorite shows are shows that speak about us, shows we feel, repost, and debate about online. His and Hers combines the weight of twists we look out for, characters who feel real, and emotional investments that make us curious, empathetic, confused, or so proud of a character that we want to share iconic moments with other viewers.

Whether you love it, hate it, or are somewhere in between, His and Hers made people talk. I mean, there are at least two sides to every story. Yours and mine, ours and theirs. His and hers.
